Horahane

Horahane is the name some of Dobrogea’s Muslim Roma use for themselves, at home. They have lived beside Turks and Tatars, in market towns and at the edge of villages. They are neighbours. They are not guidebook “colour”.

Who

A Muslim community, with roots in the Ottoman period. In Medgidia, Babadag and Constanța they were smiths, tinsmiths, brickmakers, porters. The trade is a fact, not a definition. We do not write “gypsies” and we do not ask for a dance at the gate.

What you see

Houses, a neighbourhood mosque, a workshop if it is announced in public. The same rules as in any village: do not enter a yard, do not photograph children, do not film a service. Their Ramadan belongs to the house, not to a guest iftar: the start of Ramadan.

What it is not

Not a festival. Not an ethnicity “to photograph”. The hub card stays short: Roma, among them Horahane. This page is short too.
